Subconscious and Reality

Modern psychology often defines the subconscious as the mind’s dark repository. Sufism, however, views it as the inner realm that carries the imprints of the heart and the self (nafs)—a realm that requires refinement, yet also marks the starting point of the journey toward self-knowledge. Our mind constructs the world in a matter of seconds, but this construction is usually shaped by incomplete information, past experiences, and subconscious expectations. By weaving together data from our senses, it offers us a coherent—but not always accurate—version of “reality.”
From the Sufi perspective, the heart lies beyond these veils of illusion, serving as the most subtle center of intuition, endowed with the ability to discern truth. In this course, we explore pathways to inner truth by bringing modern psychological insights into conversation with Sufi wisdom.
